Jaipuran Broadsword Fighting

Jaipuran society is the most multi-cultural society on Elandorr. Though Humans are dominant as they are all over the continent, there are settlements of Elves and Dwarves along the edge of the forests and mountains, along with communities in the large cities and towns throughout the country along with Goblins and Halflings. Most shockingly for other countries, Orcs, mostly ones that have left the cycle of war in the Shyrorn Mountains, are welcomed members society. They too have settlements along the mountains, but they mostly in large settlements. And as such, Orcish styles of fighting have influenced Jaipuran martial arts and not just Dwarven and Elvish fighting styles. Jaipuran Broadsword fighting specifically is influenced by the finesse of Elvish sword fighting along with the aggressive Orcish unarmed cestus fighting.

The style teaches starting at long range using the sword to ward off attacks. The attacks focus on the hands of the opponent and disarming them. Once an opening is formed either by the opponent reacting to a feint or by binding up their weapon, the fighter closes to close range to punch and elbow. Then assuming the fight is not over, the fighter will retreat until the next opening happens. They also learn to parry unarmed and weapon attacks with the cestus. The Orcish cestus is designed to be barbed with metal or animal teeth in Orcish culture. Though the style teaches to fight dirty and aggressive when needed, most fighters become connoisseurs of sword making.

There are many schools is this style, some which focus more on sword fighting, some focus on close quarter combat, and a couple of schools teach some grappling. There are no schools of this style outside of Jaipura, and only a couple outside of the capital. Unless you travel and live in Jaipura for years, the only way to learn this style is to find a teacher who will take you on, which is not impossible since many become mercenaries through out Elandorr. Many practitioners feel the need to practice their martial art outside the confines of a school or building. Many of these lone swordsmen will only take one student at a time. Rumor has it that there is a sword master in Temparat that owns an art gallery that does not currently have a student.

Order of the Divine Geyser

Though there are only a few monasteries of Farlun, they all have one thing in common. They are the eye of the storm. The calm before the chaos. While priests may call down storms and pretend they are like their god, monks who worship Farlun are centered and calm. They are places of serenity. The Order of the Divine Geyser is one such monastery. Their monastery is located in the western part of the Shyrorn mountains. Though there is a well traveled path that can reach it, it is nearly impenetrable. No army could reach it. The buildings are mostly stone, carved out of the mountain side, with clay tiled roofs. The original building was built around a hot spring and that is its main attraction.

Nobles and wealthy merchants who can afford to make the trip up the mountain, often come for relaxation or for recuperation. Their wealth and supplies mainly come from these trips. Pilgrims and those who wish to pray and train also come, but they are few these days. For the devout, the monks learn serenity through the pain of heat. Predominately through the use of hot water, including that which is naturally heated from the mountain itself. Though there are many hot springs, the one in the inner sanctum can only be survived by the most devout or well trained. The majority of the monks stay upon the mountain, but some have to travel to bring back supplies and each equinox at least one monk sets out to find those who are also devout in the teachings of Farlun, but prefer to show their devotion though training and meditation, not through divinity of clerics and priests.

Divine Geyser Martial Art Style [6 points]

The monks of the Order of the Divine Geyser teach a style that uses an opponent’s energy and movement against them with a principle they call “flowing with the storm.” Throwing , tripping, and pushing an opponent are the main techniques taught. Some students never learn how to throw a punch or kick, though many do eventually. Those that are touched by Farlun can learn mystic powers – able to push an opponent without strength, able to stand still while the storm rages around you, the supernatural ability to withstand heat, and to manifest the geyser that heats the monastery through the palm of their hands.
