AO Temparat – Classes 1st Semester Electives (Part 3)

The Art and Magic of Horticulture 141:

Before the coming of Uouh’took to the university, Plant magic had not been taught at here for more than a decade. Even then he only teaches one class, and students that want to learn more have to do so through Independent Study. The class focuses really on farming and gardening and the spells taught all enhance being able to grow your own food. The more privileged students have shown some disdain at this new class, but the few wizards who have come from smaller villages where farming sustains life realize very quickly that the magic they learn in this class can be brought back to their town or village to improve the lives of their families.

The spells of Plant Magic that can be learned: Ritual of Reaping, Spell of Sowing, Seek Plant, Identify Plant, and Heal Plant. Students must learn Identify Plant to pass the class.

The Magic of Movement 102:

For those who continue on with learning Movement magic in the second semester from Professor Boreira, students begin to learn spells that will help them survive combat and battles.  Though all the practice drills feel safe enough, students often realize that Professor Boreira may have learned these skills on the battlefield and not just in a class room. Their very cheerful attitude belays a darker past. The older students swear they have seen the Professor dancing routines that if they had a sword in their hand, they would be fighting instead.

Spells that can be learned are Hinder, Deflect Missile, Quick March, and Distant Blow. Students must have mastered both Haste and Apportation by the end of the class, since all other movement spells are built on those foundations. Professor Boreira also expects students to have learned at least one additional spell based on either of those foundation spells,

Body Manipulation 102:

Even in the headmaster’s office above ground, everyone knows the first day of the second semester because of Professor Grig’s habit on that day of teaching the students the Tickle spell. Honestly her students spent that first week practicing that spell, to the delight of many, and the annoyance of some. The second week she teaches students how to fumble and trip over themselves. She then spends the rest of the semester teaching students how to increase their natural abilities like being able to lift above their normal strength, running a little faster to your next class, or being able to resist falling asleep in class because of a late night study session. She expects students to practice these spells if they wish to continue studying Body Control magic in Year 2.

Besides Tickle, other spells students can learn are Clumsiness, Lend Energy, Might, Grace, and Vigor. To pass the class, students must learn Clumsiness which Professor Grig will expand upon in Year 2, and either Might, Grace, or Vigor.

The Other Elements 122:

By this class, Professor Soriena usually has most her students understanding the importance of all four elements. She teaches how Earth and Fire magic both counter other elements, but also enhance each of them. She loves teaching how earth and stone can be turned into air or into water. Or how fire can be turned into smoke and how to keep wood from being set on fire. All the elements are connected and are necessary for life. Professor Soriena abhors violence and prefers to not teach combat spells in class. Though she is quite proficient with Jet spells and students that she likes who are not bullies and really just need to defend themselves, she will teach them what they need to know. There is a story of thieves breaking into the university not long after she started teaching who were found turned to stone in the morning. She came to breakfast the next morning like nothing happened, but no professor has made fun of her since.

Spells students can learn in this class are Create Earth, Earth to Air, Earth to Water, Shape Fire, Fireproof, and Smoke. For those she is willing to teach, they can also learn Sand Jet, Mud Jet, or Fire Jet if they are willing to wake up early in the morning before breakfast or the sun comes up to learn. To pass the class they need to know Create Earth and Shape Fire. Any other spell they need in Year 2, she will teach them then.

AO Temparat – Classes 1st Semester Electives (Part 2)

Alchemy and Potions 101:

The role of the Potion Master seems to a hard position to fill. At a school that is heavily focused on elemental magic, the mundane art of potions is often overlooked. Some years it is not taught at all, or Professor Braga will teach a few students after hours. This year though, the school has hired a full time teacher of alchemy and potions, Professor Uouh’took. Professor Uouh’took is a goblin that grew up in Katen who fled west after his village was destroyed in the war. Like his mother and grandfather before him, he ran a restaurant. But unlike them, he discovered a talent to mix ingredients together to make potions and elixirs that took on magical effects. As such his fish soup truly did cure ailments. After watching his restaurant burn, Uouh’took and his wife, Ylth’took, fled first to Farallon where they spent a couple of months living off what they could sell, before traveling to Blythe where he had a cousin who could put the. Up for a few months. He eventually discovered the need for a potions instructor in Temparat. When they arrived, they found a neighborhood bereft of good food, so they decided to open up a restaurant not knowing if the teaching job would work out. Now they are incredibly busy, but fortunes are starting to change for the goblin couple.

In this class, Professor Uouh’took teaches the students first how basic chemicals react. Much like his kitchen, he expects their work stations to be clean. Any student that is able to live up to his exacting standards will receive 2 CP in the Alchemy skill, plus the recipes to make the following potions and elixirs: Water Breathing, Healing, Memory, and Friendship.

Culinary Magic 131:

Though in his restaurant with his wife, Professor Uouh’took does not cook with magic, he is in fact an expert in Food magic. While his class on Horticulture actually teaches how to grow food, by the end of this particular class, students will know how magically find food, season food, know what to cook with any ingredients, and how to with a few gestures actually cook food. Another important topic is how to test for the quality of food. Unless you are rich enough to afford an ice box or a water mage for hire, making sure nobles and merchants don’t get sick on food can make any Wizard a few florins.

Students can learn the cooking skill, in addition to, any spells that are taught. Spells that can be learned are Find Ingredient, Seek Food, Test Food, Season, Far-Tasting, Know Recipe, and Cook. To pass the class, students just need to learn how to cast Season. To learn the Cook spell, students also need to learn rudimentary Fire magic. In class, Professor Uouh’took often helps with the Fire magic if students haven’t learned the necessary ability to start a fire.

The Other Elements 121:

Fire and Earth magic are taught by Professor Soriena al Anduin, a halfling that gave up the life of the river folk to make a name for herself. When she was very young, she discovered she could command the elements, which helped her family in regards to water and perhaps air, but when she started summoning fire and walking through stone, that her family knew she was destined for a great life. Professor Soriena has been teaching now for seven years and absolutely enjoys it. This first class focuses on simple fire and earth spells, the foundation needed for becoming familiar with both schools of magic. Students that live in Tempore and really only have this school as an option, but aren’t interested in water and air magic fill up her classes. Often not understanding she believes in studying them all.

Because she is teaching two schools of magic, this is a hard class, but students often learn a lot of spells. Spells they can learn are: Badger Paws, Pebble, Seek Earth, Shape Earth, Earth to Stone, Ember, Ignite Fire, Seek Fire, Create Fire, Extinguish Fire. Students must learn Shape Earth and Create Fire to pass the class.

The Art of Divination 101:

For students interested in Divination, there is no more knowledgeable teacher than Severina Fria. She teaches about about the various types of divination and focuses on Astrology, Crystal Gazing, Lecanomancy, and Physiognomy because students are more likely to learn the prerequisites else where in the curriculum. Unlike her History of Magic classes, she does teach the basic knowledge of magic needed to cast the spell Divination, though actually casting that spells comes in the second year class.

Spells students will learn are: Thaumatomancy, Seeker, Trace, and History. Students must learn History to progress to the second year course. Some students will take the class over if needed, or spend time in the library. The must also learn two or more Seek spells from other classes.

AO Temparat – Classes 1st Semester Electives (Part 1)

The Magic of Movement 101:

Julin Boreira is first and foremost a dancer. Besides teaching at the Arcane Order they also own and teach at their premier dancing school in Temparat. Professor Boreira is a master of Bardic Magic and rumored to be one of the masked lords of Gurri. They are the professor that the majority of Bards who train at the Arcane Order have as their advisor, though the few who can handle Professor Fria’s abrasiveness of their magic choose her. The Librarian is also known to favor those who study the magic of Gurri. Most students start the class wanting to teleport, most leave understanding they may never learn to teleport. Movement magic is some of the hardest magic to master.

Spells that can be learned in this class are: Cushion, Flee, Haste, and Apportation. Students must learn either Haste or Apportation to progress to The Magic of Movement 102.

The Magic of Song 151:

Professor Boreira also teaches this course. Two colleges of magic are touched upon in this course: Communication and Empathy, as well as, Sound. The majority of students in this course are those who have come to the Arcane Order study Bardic Magic, though there are a few brave non bardic students who will take this course as an elective as it is really the only way to get any formal training on Communication or Empathy spells. Those who ride the wave, find this class one of their most enjoyable. The classroom is constantly full of ruckus music that reverberates through out the campus.

Professor Boreira expects a lot out their students in this class and students are taught more spells than many of the other first year classes. Spells that are taught in this class are: Drama, Sense Foes, Sense Life, Sense Emotion, Throw Voice, Sound, Voices, and Keen (Hearing).

Beasts and How to Tame Them 111:

Professor Grig’aln Taar’ak Be’eak has always had an affinity with animals and beasts. Over time she learned to soothe and control them, but also to become them. In her learning how to transform, she also became a master of Body Control magic. There is a small branch of the Arcane Order among the Iron Fang dwarves that focuses on Earth and Fire magic and Professor Grig taught there for many years. But when the Temparat school decided to expand their classes a few years ago, to allow Body Control as a major school of study, Professor Grig decided to move. Not living under the mountains is still weird for her, but her classes are always taught in the basement except for the necessary time at the zoo.

In this class, you will learn the basics of handling dangerous and non-dangerous animals, plus have the ability to learn the following spells: Call, Groom, Beast-Soother, and (Animal) Control. Students must be able to control at least one type of animal (vermin, fish, reptile, bird, or mammal) to pass the class. Often to Professor Grig’s befuddlement, many students pick Fish Control.

Body Manipulation 101:

Though Professor Grig’s passion resides mostly in teaching her classes on beasts, she was hired to be the Arcane Order’s primary professor of Body Control spells. Unlike a lot of professors, she insists that students learn by having the spells they learn cast upon themselves. First by her, and then from other students. She does not take too kindly to those students that use Body Control spells for any malicious intent, but also seems to have a soft spot for those students to learn to get bullies off of their back by a carefully timed Belch spell.

Spells learned in this class are: Belch, Stifle, Itch, and Spasm. Students must learn Spasm to advance to the next class.

AO Temparat – Classes 2nd Semester

Intro to Magic 102, History of Magic 102, Water Magic 102, Air Magic 102, and one elective chosen by the student.

Intro to Magic 102:

Professor Braga continues with his teaching of the basics of magic. In this semester, he focuses on other the colleges of magic taught at the school. Particularly the college of Food, Plant, Fire, Earth, Animal, and Sound. Also taught are the basics of alchemy, for those who would like pursue potion making and the basics of enchanting, for those who wish to pursue enchantment magic. Though there are no Enchantment magic classes for the Order of the Basilisk, Professor Braga is known to help worthwhile students during his office hours. Given the frequent explosions and laughter coming from the classroom this semester, it would appear most students are enjoying themselves. Spells that can be learned in this class are: Spotless Hands, Oven Mitts, Squeak, and Sorcerer’s Stand In

History of Magic 102:

In the second semester, Professor Fria teaches more about the history of the Arcane Order schools, specifically the one in Temparat. She then continues on discussing other, lesser types of magic like hedge wizards, divine magic, and the rare bardic magic. Students very much learn the Arcane Order history of magic and Professor Fria does not deviate much from that standard curriculum. Bards often get annoyed with the class and some end up diving further into the understanding of their magic on their own. No magic is taught. Though students who enjoy her teaching, find her divination magic classes quite enjoyable. Some bardic magic students the school get rubbed wrong and rarely further their divination studies under Professor Fria, and elect to learn on their own from the library.

Water Magic 102:

Professor Kloro builds upon the lessons of the last semester and by the end of this class, all students are well versed in how to manipulate water as an element. There is less lecture and more hands on practice under the tutelage of Suzana Mata during this semester. Near the end of the semester is a field trip on a boat where they are taught the application of many of the spells that they have been learning in the classroom. It is a running joke, but it is always raining or storming on this trip. The Umbrella spell gets lots of practice. Professor Kederesk often joins Professor Kloro and Suzana on this field trip.

Students can learn the following spells: Create Water, Destroy Water, Shape Water, Umbrella. Students must learn Shape Water to progress to the 200 level classes.

Air Magic 102:

In this next introductory class, Professor Kederesk spends weeks on students understanding how to create and control air. Academically, they are also introduced to basics of weather patterns and how to recognize clouds. At the end of the semester, she focuses on smells and how to control them. Students that desire a sense of dramatic entrance, learn, just by watching Professor Kederesk how to have cloaks, dresses, and hair flow in impressive displays.

Spells that can be learned in this class are: Create Air, Shape Air, No-Smell, Destroy Air. Students must learn Shape Air to progress to the 200 level classes.

Electives for the second semester include: Any from the first semester. Also Magic of Movement 102, Art of Divination 102, Body Manipulation 102, Culinary Magic 131, The Art and Magic Horticulture 141.

At the Temparat campus of the Arcane Order, the first semester classes include Intro to Magic 101, History of Magic 101, Water Magic 101, Air Magic 101, and one elective chosen by the student.

Intro to Magic 101 is taught by Teo Braga. Professor Braga has been teaching the course for at least fifty years. In the first semester, he teaches the basic incantations and hand movements used for almost any spell. He is a stickler for accuracy and you will cast the same spell over and over until it meets his expectations. Though he has high standards, he is almost universally loved. Professor Braga also makes sure by the end of the first semester that all students have a basic understanding of the six major colleges of magic taught at the Temparat campus. Spells you have the chance to learn include: Diver’s Blessing, Know Thyself, Open Door, and Jolt

History of Magic 101 is taught by Severina Fria. She covers in the first semester the origins of the Arcane Order, the mastery of Lycretian magic by the first 12 wizards, and then focuses on the development of the colleges of magic that are primarily taught at the school. Professor Fria does not teach magic. She wants her students to have an academic understanding of where their power comes from. Don’t cheat in her class. She is a master of divination and knowledge magic.

Water Magic 101 is taught by a Jaipurian Half Elf by the name of Fikri Kloro. Once a famous ship wizard, he retired a decade ago and began teaching. He started teaching at the Jaipura branch of the Arcane Order, but a few years ago he was lured to Temparat. No one at the school is better at Water magic than Professor Kloro. Though he teaches all the water Magic classes, he only lectures the 101 and 102 once a week, the labs and spell casting are all supervised by Suzana Mata, who graduated last year as an Order of the Gryphon and is now learning advanced water magic so she can complete her Order of the Basilisk. Spells you have the chance to learn include: Sponge, Squirt, Seek Water, Purify Water. Students must learn Seek Water to progress to Water Magic 102.

Air Magic 101 is taught by a young woman from Farallon, Nan’elle Kederesk, who just in the last couple of years, received her Order of the Pegasus. She is incredibly well versed in both Air and Weather magic. Though she teaches all of the Air Magic classes for the Order of the Gryphon, she shares Weather magic teaching with Professor Kloro. She loves fashion and billowy dresses and robes. It is not uncommon to see her floating around campus instead of walking. Spells you can learn in her class are Might Breath, Stinkguard, Purify Air, Seek Air. Student must learn Seek Air to progress to Air Magic 102.

Arcane Order – Temparat Campus

Most major cities have a campus of the Arcane Order and Temparat is no different. Nestled in the middle of the Tempore capital, the campus consists of dorms for the thirty or forty students who call this place home for anywhere from two years (Order of the Gryphon) to five years (Order of the Basilisk) to seven years for an elite few (Order of the Pegasus).

By the end of the Order of Gryphon, a student will have received the basic training to be a licensed member of the Arcane Order. Further study can be done, but only the most dedicated, magically talented, or wealthy generally do. The Temparat college specializes in Water and Air magic and most students either Major or Minor in both schools. The seven schools you can major in are Water, Air, Movement, Weather, Knowledge, Body Control, and miscellaneous where you pick 3 schools of your choice.

Major = 20 character points spent.

Minor = 10 character points spent.

Each class will give 1 CP for a C, 2 CP for a B, or 4CP for an A. At the end of each class they will make a Thaumatology skill roll. A critical failure means you have to take the class over. A failure means you get a C, a success a B, a critical success, an A. These points must be spent on specific spells per the class taken.
